Good news everyone! I’m excited to share that I’m gearing up for the Big Sur Marathon next year on April 27th, 2025! Those who know me know that I absolutely love traveling, and running has been my ticket to exploring new places around the globe. So when I had the chance to combine a beautiful destination with running, I couldn’t resist. I mean, who wouldn’t want to take on a marathon along one of the most beautiful coastlines out there?
I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about the scenic drive up and down California’s coast, so when I saw photos of the Big Sur coastline, I knew I had to do it. And what better way to do that than running a marathon?
This adventure isn’t just about the race itself—it’s also about the journey, both literal and metaphorical. I love traveling with my family, and this time, my wife, daughter, and the in-laws are all coming along for the ride. They’ve been my cheerleaders through my marathon journey, following me to Tokyo, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. I’m especially grateful since my in-laws have been there for every one of those Abbott World Marathon Majors (just Boston left to get my six stars?!), and now it’s time to tick off Big Sur together.
Last year, I almost signed up for Big Sur, but the timing clashed with the London Marathon (April 21st, 2024!). It turned out to be fortunate since the marathon had to be rerouted because of a landslide on Highway 1—apparently not the first time it’s happened. It turned into an out-and-back route instead so runners only got to witness half of the route. So I guess it was meant to be, with fingers crossed for the full, uninterrupted experience this year.
Now, running this marathon won’t be a walk in the park. I’m especially wary of Hurricane Point, known as the highest point of the race. I hear it’s a killer climb—from 40 feet up to 560 feet, all in one go, right around the halfway mark of the marathon. It’s going to be tough, no doubt. The Big Sur course is famously hilly, and their own website mentions not to expect a personal best here. Let’s see how I do!
So, what’s my training plan? Starting in December, I’ll be following the Pfitz 18/55 Plan (check out this website that lays out your mileage for you). It’s all about gradually increasing mileage. Last year for London, I was doing four runs a week, ranging from 12 to 16 kilometers and capping off with long runs over the weekend that can hit up to 32 kilometers. This time, I’ll add more hills running to get my calves ready for the inclines. If anyone wants to join me, hit me up—I’m always up for a run and maybe a coffee or two after!
Besides running, I’m excited about exploring Monterey and Carmel with the family. There’s just so much to see and do. The Old Fisherman’s Wharf sounds like a great spot to check out, and my daughter is already jazzed about visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We’re definitely spending a lot of time outdoors and soaking in all the natural beauty.
After the marathon, we plan to head up to San Jose to catch up with some friends and explore the local scene there. It’s one of those road trips I’m really looking forward to—just relaxing and enjoying a scenic drive up through California with the family.
There’s a lot of running and planning in my future, but that’s part of the fun. I can’t wait to lace up my shoes and dive into this next adventure. If anyone has tips about running Big Sur or must-see spots in Monterey and Carmel, please let me know! And, of course, if you’re interested in training together, I’m all ears.
Here’s to good weather, amazing views, and maybe even a chance to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Who knows? Completing my Six Star journey in Boston with family cheering on the sidelines sounds like a pretty sweet deal. Can’t wait to share more as the journey unfolds!
